One of the best parts of living and working in Los Altos is having so many incredible restaurants right here in town. From casual neighborhood hangouts to elevated dining experiences, Los Altos offers a wide variety of cuisines that are both delicious and memorable. Whether I’m celebrating a special occasion, grabbing a quick bite in between showings, or catching up with friends over a leisurely meal, I’ve found some truly special places that never disappoint.
Below are just a few of my favorite spots around town. Each one offers something unique, and all of them represent the vibrant, diverse flavors that make our community so special. Let me know how your experience was if you stop by!
Tal Palo
📍 149 Main St, Los Altos, CA 94022
This charming spot holds a very special place in my heart. I celebrated my birthday lunch here last year, and it was one of the most memorable meals I’ve ever had. Tal Palo is a cozy, family-run gem that brings the warmth, vibrancy, and soulful flavors of Mexico to downtown Los Altos.
One of the things that makes Tal Palo so special is that there’s no set menu. Their offerings change daily, based on what’s fresh, seasonal, and inspiring to the chef. When you walk in, simply ask what’s cooking. It adds a sense of excitement to each visit and makes dining here feel like a personalized experience every time.
From the presentation to the flavors, every dish feels like a celebration. Their team is welcoming and passionate about what they do, and it truly shows.

Callao
📍 376 1st St, Los Altos, CA 94022
Callao is a wonderful addition to the downtown dining scene, and if you haven’t been yet, you’re in for a treat. This restaurant transports you straight to Peru with bold, layered flavors, creative plating, and a warm, inviting atmosphere.
It’s a great place to bring friends, celebrate a milestone, or simply indulge in something flavorful and different. Their rotisserie chicken is absolutely phenomenal - perfectly seasoned, incredibly juicy, and served with sides that elevate the entire experience. You can tell that everything on the menu is crafted with intention, from the sauces to the garnishes.
The space itself is also a standout. Callao is beautifully designed, with soft lighting and an ambiance that’s both stylish and comfortable. I’ve shared quite a few photos of their dishes on my Instagram, and it’s no wonder why. The plates are as beautiful as they are delicious.

El Comal
📍 266 Main St, Los Altos, CA 94022
When I’m craving something hearty and authentic, El Comal is one of my first stops. This is a go-to for healthy Mexican comfort food, made with love and rich with flavor. The vibe here is relaxed and friendly, and it’s a wonderful place to enjoy a satisfying meal.
There are so many great options on the menu, but I always recommend the Gobernador shrimp Tacos. Both are absolutely packed with flavor. The Gobernador features grilled shrimp and melted cheese inside a soft tortilla, and it’s truly crave-worthy.
What sets El Comal apart is also its thoughtfully curated decor. You’ll appreciate the interior design, with pieces that pay homage to styles dating all the way back to the 6th century B.C. It’s an unexpectedly beautiful setting for a casual dining experience.

Los Altos Grill
📍 233 3rd St, Los Altos, CA 94022
A longtime staple in the community, Los Altos Grill consistently delivers high-quality dishes and warm hospitality. This is one of those places where you know you’ll have a great meal every single time.
The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between polished and cozy. Whether you’re dining with family or enjoying a night out with friends, it always feels welcoming. Their Macho Salad is a personal favorite. It’s hearty, fresh, and has just the right amount of crunch. It’s filling but not too heavy, which makes it perfect for lunch or dinner.
I also recommend trying the house-smoked salmon or one of their featured wines. Many selections come from local vineyards, which is a lovely touch. And if you’re a Los Altos local, there’s a good chance you’ll bump into a friend or neighbor while you’re there.
Susan’s Select: The Macho Salad. It hits the spot every time.
Barbayani Greek Taverna
📍 388 Main St, Los Altos, CA 94022
Barbayani brings a fresh, Mediterranean flair to Main Street. With live music on certain nights, a lively crowd, and a wide selection of flavorful dishes, this restaurant offers more than just a great meal, it delivers a memorable experience.
It’s a fantastic choice whether you’re vegetarian, pescatarian, or simply someone who enjoys bright, fresh ingredients. The Ahi Tuna is prepared beautifully and always feels like a healthy indulgence. Their Beet Salad is another standout. The dish is vibrant, crisp, and tossed with just the right amount of seasoning and dressing.
What I love most about Barbayani is how it combines great food with an uplifting, joyful energy. It’s a place where you want to linger, enjoy good conversation, and maybe even dance a little if the music moves you.
